WHAT ARE WAVE STARTS?
Wave starts were introduced at the Südasuve Challenge – Võsu event in 2018 and received the Running Innovation Award at Estonia’s national running conference in 2019.
The purpose of wave starts is to reduce bottlenecks and congestion in the start corridor. This means that participants can essentially run at their preferred pace right from the start. An elite runner and a recreational runner or jogger can be at the start line at the same time without getting in each other’s way. Nevertheless, participants planning to take it easy are asked not to start in the first waves.
Timing begins when the participant crosses the timing mats at the start. Wave starts also allow the event to take place in an urban environment without unnecessarily disturbing pedestrians and other people using the area. The resulting single-file flow of participants can comfortably pass parents with pushchairs or couples walking hand-in-hand.
